Writing jokes about a brand isn't all that different from writing sponsored content for that brand. After all, you have to understand the product before you warp it into something that's (with any luck) funny. Understanding the essential features of a product or the messaging a particular brand might use is the starting point for any Onion headline.

In other words, the skills I've used for The Onion to parody a brand are skills I can also use to promote that same brand. (And if Chiquita wants to revolutionize produce, the easy-grip banana is theirs for a reasonable royalty.)
